We've got our hands in a number of projects these days. Neil got on a paper mache kick for awhile and then worked on this Stephen King print. It will soon be available for sale in our etsy shop. Also, fans of his tarot prints will be happy to know that he is working on The Tower card again. He started it last Fall but had to put it down for awhile.

I have been doing some painting. This four foot square panel is a commission for some friends. It's still in the beginning stages. Eventually it will have a lovely poem on it.

2011 in Review

2011 was bittersweet. Uncannily so. We lost two people close to us but following each of those losses we experienced great happiness at the weddings of close (yet far away) friends and family members. Overall though, 2011 was a great year for us. Looking back at my blog posts I'm pretty proud and amazed at all we accomplished - big and small.

So here's my Top 5 from 2011:

~~Quit My Job~~ Went Part-time: Ok, so I didn't quit my job all together...reality kind of set in. But, I did manage to go part time and I'm a lot happier and saner now.

The Great Wall of Winchester Book Gallery: By far this was our biggest accomplishment this year. I can't thank Andy & Jen enough for the opportunity. Not only did this project push us creatively and force us to work collaboratively but it brought us closer to the community and we made some great friends along the way.

Schoolhouse Craft: Winning the trip to Seattle and the School House Craft conference was the biggest and best surprise of the year. I learned so much and met some really awesome people.

New School/New Hats: This was another surprise. I had kind of given up on finding an alternative school for my daughter but not only did our daughter start at a new wonderful school this year but Neil and I started teaching art there as well!

And all the rest...
I'm having a hard time picking a 5th thing! 2011 was a crazy year! I won a crystal trophy...we travelled a bunch...met some cool artists and a man name Deep Sea John...saw one of my best friends get married (and I got to be bridesmaid), swapped cookies, saw some good shows, ate some good food, made lots of art and made lots of new friends! So here's to an even better year ahead!

Have you ever heard of Krampus? I'm just learning about this demonic mythical creature. According to European Alpine folklore, Krampus basically looks like the devil - cloven hooves, horns and a long pointed tongue. Basically he's the anti-Santa. Whereas Santa rewards kids for being good, Krampus punishes them by beating them with switches and chains, then he packs them up and takes them to Hell. Pretty harsh don't you think?

Making Christmas - Mason Jars Many Ways

Ah the ever versatile mason jar...in our house we use them on a daily basis. From canning, drinking out of them and storage to raising sea monsters we are constantly finding new ways to use them. Usually during the holidays I give homemade preserves or last year I did candied citrus peels in the jars and decorated them with some fabric and ribbon.

Here are few other diy projects I found in my search for gift inspiration this year...

The Sewing Kit in Jar is one of my favorite ideas - I think I'm going to make one for myself. It's so simple and handy and really easy to make! You can find the instructions on how to retrofit the cap with the pin cushion for a sewing kit in a jar on Martha Stewart's site here or if you need visuals instructables has an easy how-to as well.

Christmas in a Bottle from A Subtle Revelry would be a fun DIY project to do with kids. You simply fill the jars with holiday treats and treasures and then decorate the jar. They sent them into the ocean but in lieu of that you could leave them on neighbors doorsteps or random public places to

spread holiday cheer!

What more does one need to get into the holiday spirit with but, well, spirits?

If you don't have a moonshine still you may want to opt for an infused vodka like the above peppermint vodka. The vodka and lovely mason jar packaging ideas are from Delightfully Tacky.

Making Christmas 2011 - Gingerbread Houses

Mr. Hare and I started the holiday activities a little early this year. Last month our art classes entered into a local gingerbread house contest and we had the honor of helping them realize their designs. I can't say we are seasoned gingerbread house architects, in fact, I think this was a first for the both of us. But, although it was fairly time consuming, it was pretty easy and a fun group activity.

First off, we gathered inspiration. Check out my pinterest board here for lots of ideas! Then we brought some example pictures to the students and brainstormed with them. Next, the students did sketches and wrote down what materials they would like to use. After coming to a consensus on the design, we took each classes' ideas home and drew up templates. Since our class time is limited, Neil and I constructed the houses at home and then brought them to class to decorate. Here are the final houses!

My lower elementary class decided to a Halloween themed house since we did it the week of Halloween. They showed great restraint in not eating all the materials.

Neil's sixth grade class did this one. I love the pond, the fort and the campfire!

It's hard to tell from the poor quality of the photos but this is a barn. The kids decided to a barn because prior to this year the school had been held in a renovated barn. I love the swedish fish swimming in the creek!

Below is a link to the guide to making gingerbread houses we used. I highly recommend making the royal icing rather than buying it. That way you can add more powder sugar to adjust the thickness and it's cheaper. Also you definitely want to have a partner when putting it together; it can be kind of tricky. Have fun!

School House Craft Interview!

Halloween Re-Style

I've been trying to get my daughter to be Alice from Alice in Wonderland for years and finally she succumbed to my wishes! I was a little worried at first that I was going to have to buy a ready made generic costume but luckily on my first thrift store stop with the costume in mind I found the above princess dress!

As you can see, all I had to do was cut off the sleeves (below the elastic) and then cut off some of the length of the skirt and hem. Then I got some cotton muslin and made the apron. Add a black ribbon in the hair, black mary janes and white tights and voila you have Alice!

Repurposing Tupperware!

So...I have these orange tupperware canisters in the Horse & Hare Etsy Shop and started to think about what I could do with them, other than use them for storage, if no one ends up buying them. So I took to the internet and did some digging and found some great ideas...

TUPPER TIME!

IMOTIME makes these great clocks re-using not only the lids of tupperware containers but

also other unusual items like baby dolls, boots and toilet seats.

Boots N Gus, another etsy seller, makes awesome lighting fixtures repurposing tupperware. I must say though that I'm really in love with their mason jar chandeliers. They also have this hanging planter upcycled from a copper cake pan and tupperware canister.

Thrift Finds

I decided to stop in at one of my favorite thrift stores today and they did not disappoint! So many places these days mark up their vintage items and I just think that's wrong. Especially if the thrift store is a charity shop. This shop is a charity shop for a local charity and everything they sell is marked reasonably. I love it! Here are a few things I found today soon to be at Horse & Hare Vintage.

Pagoda Salt & Pepper and Condiment Serving Tray. You probably can't tell from

this picture but the handles to the tray are bonsai trees.

I'm always on the lookout for men's belt buckles and quickly spied this tooled leather

Honda buckle from the 60's or 70's in the case! I think this one is pretty rare as I can't seem to

find another one like it online.

I can't seem to find anything about the maker, Povy, of these folksy bird bookends online. Unfortunately the one on the left is in need of some repair but it's not very noticeable and nothing a little glue won't fix!

Adventures in Teaching Art

I didn't really expect to be teaching art, it's never been in my plan, but when Neil and I were asked to for my daughter's new school I thought what the heck. I have Kindergarteners through 2nd graders and Neil has 3rd through 6th. I must stress that I have no educational training. Neil started to get his teaching certificate and did some student teaching so he was a little better prepared but I went in this almost completely blind. I only have five students and thought that it would be pretty easy but my daughter is nine now so it's been awhile since I've had to deal with younger children. I had forgotten about how little one's psyches work at this age and the lack of a prolonged attention span. It's really been a learning (and re-learning) experience for me as much as it has for them. So any-hoo, I thought I'd share some of the projects we've done so far! The first three are from my class and the last is Neil's.

Our second week project was Spider Monkey Mobiles! The kids were learning about rain forests in class this week so I thought I'd tie it in with art class. I got this project from a book called Crafts for Kids Who Are Wild About Rainforests by Kathy Ross. This book had lots of great projects but I love monkeys so I had to do this one! One tip I have for this project if you are doing it with Kindergarteners would be to pre-cut your shapes. This cut down our time making them which was around an hour. I think if they had had to cut them they would have probably lost interest but this way they just had to assemble the pieces and then they could add unique touches like in the pic below the student decided to give her monkeys clothing!

For the third week we did cave art since the kids were learning about the beginnings of ancient history.

We first watched a virtual tour of the Lascaux caves in France (see here). Then we looked at cave and rock art from other cultures such as African, Aboriginal and Native American. Some of the kids got on a volcano kick while others liked to draw animals and symbols that they made up.

This past week I grabbed our project from a book I have called How to Teach Art to Children. This book is great for teaching young children grades 1-6 about the 7 elements of art - line, shape, color, value, texture, form and space. It's filled with very easy to do projects and also worksheets. The first week of school we had done some line exercises so I thought I'd come back to that this week. The idea was to do line designs, each containing either vertical, horizontal or diagonal lines but it kind of turned into a free for all and the kids just did whatever they wanted which was ok by me as long as they were engaged and content!

For Neil's first class he had them do aboriginal inspired (endangered) animals. He pre-cut the animal shapes for the students to decorate. He also brought in ground up pigments from rocks and clay he had made for them to use in addition to regular acrylic paint.

All in all, I think our projects have been successful. Hopefully in the next couple weeks I will get this whole classroom management thing down! If you have any project suggests or teaching tips

Dispatches from Seattle & The Schoolhouse Craft Conference

For some reason I've never really given much thought into Seattle. People have told me a little about it... that it's a great city but it's never had much of a draw for me. Most cities have something that it's known for and usually that something for Seattle is coffee and rain...not much of a tourist attraction. But after being here only a day this city has worked her understated charms on me.

Today's Schoolhouse Craft Conference did not disappoint. Everyone I've met has been so nice and we're all so eager to learn from one another! I can't wait for day two! I'm really tired and ready to conk out but I'd thought I'd share a few pics from today. I will be sure to share more details later on!

I thought I'd step out of the realm of etsy this week and look around at some other online shops. The first two are from the well known threadless and the last is from society6. This was my first time really looking around Society6 and was pleasantly surprised by by what I found. The artwork is created by artists around the world and then produced by Society6. They do art prints, laptop skins, iphone cases and obviously t-shirts and hoodies.

So for this week's T-shirt Tuesday I went with a food theme which turned into a food with a face theme but I stayed away from meat because Andy is a vegetarian and also because cartoon meat with a face is kind of creepy. So without further ado....

Life's Little Surprises

This past week was a little crazy...much like this leprechaun sculpture I saw at a yard sale the other day.

I think it had something to do with the impending full moon which is tonight. But I digress, let's just say the week was filled with some surprises...a mis-set alarm on the first day of school, a willful child in my first art class, computer systems down at work...basically nothing went as planned but I also got a very big happy surprise too! I won a trip to Seattle to the School House Craft Conference!

I entered on a whim a couple weeks ago and lo and behold I actually won! I'm really excited about it.

For those of you that know me or have been following the Horse & Hare blog over the past year, you know how I've been working to build up our etsy and freelance businesses. This conference is all about running creative small businesses focusing on craft, art and design. Some of the classes are - Organize your Business and Create Life Balance, Productivity for the Overwhelmed (that's for me!), Blogging 101 and an etsy admin will be reviewing shops each day. Well, hopefully next week with the full moon come and gone the trip will go off without a hitch and I will be sure to set two alarms for my second first day of school of the year! Wish me luck!

Beach pics and sneak peeks!

The young one and I got back from the beach (Rehobeth, Delaware) on Monday. It was nice to get away for a few days before the madness of back to school and autumn/winter projects ensue. This season the horse and hare will be especially busy. We are doing several new things - participating in a couple of holiday craft fairs, selling our work in another shop (details to come) and we're teaching art at our daughter's school! Also, we will be doing a little more traveling than we normally do which I am super excited about. So, with all these things in mind among numerous other things flying around my head, the transition from vacation mode to school/work mode has been difficult these past couple of days! But anyway...while we were away sunning, swimming and crabbing (for the first time) Neil was at home toiling away as usual. Here's a few things he's been up to...

Cotton Spaceship takes most of their designs from late 1800's to early 1900's letterpress engravings but this cat shirt is what caught my eye at first. But since cats were last week I went with this

creepy monkey instead.

Out of Alexandria, Kentucky C. Plummer creates his t-shirts by hand printing his hand carved woodblocks making every shirt an original work of art. I really like this simple Record T-Shirt and he has a mix tape shirt too!

I love these embroidered pieces from Little Sasquatch. They are hand embroidered by a lady named Joanna in London. She does a variety of portraits, Talking Heads and Twin Peaks quotes among other things and will do custom orders. I especially love the Kurt Vonnegut illustration on vintage fabric and who wouldn't want an embroidered portrait of Werner Herzog in their home?

Usually I only do one artist for Must See Monday but as I was logging in to post this I saw that Emily Martin had a new post on her blog announcing a new book! This will be her first illustrated young reader novel based around her characters in the Oddfellow's Orphanage portrait series. I can't wait! Mr. Hare has been taking a self-taught crash course on screen printing these past couple of days. Not too bad for a newbie eh? I'll be learning how to do it this week...can't wait!

Yay, T-shirt Tuesday is back and not tossed aside like so many other blog series attempts. I am happy to tell you that the Mer Jack Tee from last week's post won my friend's heart and was promptly purchased! I will have a photo in the near future! So now on with the show... I mean shirts...

My first pick comes from an artist I've been admiring for awhile on the etsy - Jose Pulido (Mis Nopales Art) It's really hard to choose just one! Jose does really fun pop referenced calaveras and assorted flying animals but I chose this Hug Monster instead... Andy I totally understand if you choose the Ben Franklinstein instead.

What's been cooking...

I bought these beautiful eggplants last week at a local farmer's market and as I do not eat eggplant that often I had to figure out what to make with it. I didn't want to do eggplant parmigiana so I settled on doing a focaccia bread of sorts using Bisquick. Unfortunately, I must have been so hungry that I neglected to take the after picture. So you will just have to trust it came out looking cheesy and delicious. So this how I made it...

Using an 8x9 glass pan greased with a tablespoon of olive oil
Pre-Heat Oven to 400 degrees fahrenheit

Dough Mixture:

3 Cups Bisquick or generic biscuit mix
1 cup milk
1 Teaspoon Each of Rosemary, Thyme, Oregano and Basil*
1 Tablespoon of Garlic Powder* and you can add some minced garlic too if you want
Salt & Pepper to taste

*As usual I just eyeballed these ingredients so this is guess - add more or less according to your taste

Mix together - may be easiest to use your hands. Spread mixture into your greased pan. Drizzle approx. two tablespoons oil over surface of dough. Salt top. Then using sliced vegetables - I used zucchini, tomatoes, eggplant and onion make overlapping rows then top with sliced yellow onion. Season with salt and pepper and drizzle with more olive oil.

Bake in oven for 25 minutes until edges are golden and veggies are roasted. Pull it out and then cover top with mozzarella cheese - fresh or shredded. Put back in oven until cheese is melted. Let stand for a little bit then cut up in squares and chow down!

Also, since it is peach season around these parts, I picked up half a peck this week and made some peach salsa. Basically it's the same as my strawberry salsa (see here) but I added some white vinegar and cilantro is good in this as well. Hope you enjoy!

Fried Green Tomatoes

I got my first job, bussing tables at Lightfoot Cafe (now Lightfoot Restaurant) in Leesburg, VA when I was 15. I have Chef Ingrid Gustavson to thank and blame for my discerning culinary taste and have never had a better fried green tomato than from her kitchen. Ingrid's are perfectly fried and topped with jalapeno cheddar cheese, szechwan chili cream and sauteed shrimp. So, needless to say, mine do not compare but when I have a hankerin' (which is every tomato season) and can't make it out to Lightfoot I make this recipe. Again sorry my measurements aren't exact! Hope you enjoy and please feel free to send me suggestions and your recipes!

Red Pepper Remoulade/Sauce:
Jar of roasted red pepper drained first or you can use fresh
Clove of Minced Garlic
Salt & Pepper
1 to 2 Tblspoons Mayo
1 tblspn sour cream
Cayenne to taste

1/4 inch of vegetable oil, heated on medium test heat with a bread crumb when it's sizzles it's ready for frying
1+ Medium size green tomatoes sliced- Usually they are hard to find in the supermarket so go to your local farmer's market or grow them yourself!
2 eggs beaten in shallow dish
Equal parts cornmeal and all purpose flour
Dip slices in egg and then dip in flour mixture
Fry both sides until golden

Top with cheddar cheese and sauce and chow down!

Done and Done!

This past week we were very sad to hear of the passing of the artist Lucian Freud.

A long time ago when the Hare and I were young art students and hadn't been living together for very long we were perusing a local book store and came upon this massive hardbound book of Lucian Freud's work. We had to have it. At this time, my mother, who was paying my rent, was unaware of us living together and Neil was paying me half the rent. We quickly decided that his half of the rent would go to the book. Later on we broke up and a had a little custody battle over the book but I won (ha ha). Eventually we got back together...I still joke that it was because Neil missed the book.

For those of you that have not heard of the artist see more here at artnet. And yes he was related to the famous Sigmund Freud; he was his grandson.

Also new at the Horse & Hare are these Sun & Moon woodblock prints again by Neil. These are the first woodblock prints he's done. Carving woodblocks is a lot harder than linocut carving but I think he did a great job.

So, as I said in the previous post, we've been very busy this week. Things are falling into place with the book store project I keep mentioning. Below is a peek at the wall. There's not much there yet but while we were gone some fellas painted it, as you can see, with chalkboard paint. Thanks Nate, Alex and Andy! The rest of the print enlargements have been ordered and as I write the sound of a table saw a buzzin' is coming from my basement and the frames are being built! We've never taken on such a big, time intensive project and have learned a lot along the way. Hopefully when all is said in done it looks great. Keep your fingers crossed for us!

In other news...here is a meal I made one night. Zucchini cakes, tomato salad and balsamic sauteed green beans.

Friday was our 11 year wedding anniversary. It really doesn't seem like it's been that long! To celebrate we went out to dinner and then went to see The Hot Seats. The Hot Seats are a five man acoustic string band that combine bluegrass, old time and ragtime traditional music throwing in a little vaudevillian humor in between. One of the guys is an ol' school chum and I can't say enough good things! If it sounds like your cup of tea check out them out here. It's been only a week since we were in Tennessee but with the crazy jam packed week we've had it seems like it's been a month. Our last couple of days on vacation we went to Mike Wolfe's (American Picker) Antique Archaeology store in Nashville, watched numerous episodes of Shaun the Sheep...drank some beer, stopped by The Parthenon and took in a show at Third Man Records (Natural Child and The Strange Boys). Greetings from Nashville! We've been having a great time on our vacation...boating, swimming, relaxing...and last night we had the best Thai food we've ever had at The Smiling Elephant . If you visit or live in the area I highly recommend having a taste. We're thinking about going back before we leave. We also took our nephew to his first show last night. Turbo Fruits opened. They were a blast...think 60's surf/garage meets Black Sabbath. For some free downloads and streaming go here. The Greenhornes headlined and they were, as my friend Andy would say, amaaa-zing. Despite their kind of deadpan, quiet demeanor they really packed a punch. Well, that's all for now folks! This past week has been so busy! I've been blog-sick, wanting to write about our activities but just haven't had the time! So here is a quick re-cap...

Yard Sales were picked. If you know what that black wand-like thing is in the tin let me know! I think it's an old curling iron but I'm not sure.

Grilled chicken and cold penne pasta was a quickly thrown together one evening - our grill has been getting a work out lately! Tossed with rosemary, oregano, basil, EVOO, balsamic vinegar, feta cheese, grape tomatoes and cucumbers.

Neil printed a batch of our Homage to Richard Scarrey print for a local children's literature conference.

Jane Stern got a new head (she's much happier now).

Azzy read to dogs at the library - a little event called Paws for Reading. This was a great idea!

Etsy shared a link yesterday to this blog "from the desk of...". A collaborative blog where artists, writers, designers or whomever submit pictures of their workspaces. Being a voyeur I love looking at how the other half "live" and getting ideas for my own living/workspace. Personally, I'm a little embarrassed to show you our workspace because it's messy and not ideal. Right now basically our living room and kitchen serve as our "studio". Neil works in the basement sometimes but it's too dark and dingy for me so until we finally get it finished it's upstairs for me. So here it is...the horse and hare "printshop" and also some sneak peeks at some prints I did today.

Chocolate cake pops, chocolate mustaches and corn cakes...that's what!

I got the cake pops recipe from Apartment Therapy the Kitchn. The only pointer I would give you is to freeze your cake balls before you dip them in the melted chocolate...otherwise they tend to fall off the stick. While getting some of the ingredients for the cake pops I picked up the mustache molds (available at Michaels Craft Stores). The molds were great for using up that left over chocolate.

Lastly, fresh corn cakes are summer favorite of mine. You will need....

2 1/2 cups fresh corn kernels ( about 5 ears)
3 Large Eggs
3/4 cups milk
3 Tbsp. Melted Butter
3/4 cups all purpose flour
3/4 cups yellow or white cornmeal
8 oz. (2 cups) grated cheese - mozzarella, cheddar, colby jack, pepper jack (or any combination of) - I used a cup of mozzarella and a cup of colby jack
1 small to medium scallion chopped (or you can use 2 Tbsp. fresh chives chopped)
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. freshly ground pepper

1. Pulse first 4 ingredients in food processor of blender 3 or 4 times until corn is coarsely chopped

2. Stir together flour and the rest of the ingredients in a large bowl, then add corn mixture and mix until dry ingredients are moistened.

3. Heat lightly greased griddle or large non-stick skillet on medium. Spoon 1/8 cup batter for each cake onto hot skillet to form 2 inch cakes ( don't spread or flatten) Cook cakes for 3-4 minutes then cook on other side for 2-3 minutes.

I sprinkle the hot cakes with more cheese, scallions or chives and a dollop of sour cream! Enjoy!

One would think in my 30 or so years that I would have made potato salad but this Memorial Day's was my first. This is not your ordinary potato salad though...I added fresh peas, tomato, cucumber and basil. Also I used new baby red and white potatoes...hardboiled egg, mayo and mustard..oh and white vinegar...sorry I can't give you the exact measurements! Also, I learned that if you douse the potatoes wih pickle juice or vinegar while they are still hot it gives them an extra zing o' flavor.

I've been wanting to play show and tell all week but haven't had time until now! I found some lovely things this past week. As you can probably tell I have a thing for yellow. The paisley dress I found at a yard sale. The lady that was having it followed me around the entire time and told me about everything I looked at. The dress was handmade by a wonderful seamstress she said. It's been kept in perfect condition. The shoes my friend grabbed for me for a couple bucks and they were brand new with the tags still on! I found the chair at thrift store on a lunch break. My grandma had the same one but in white I think. It will make a great photo prop! The spotted fawns were found at another yard sale. They will be staying with me only temporarily until I can find them a good home. Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! I will actually be having a yard sale tomorrow rather than going to them! Wish me luck!

Strawberry Pickin'

It's officially strawberry season! When I was a little girl I used to go picking with my grandparents. Then we'd take our massive haul home and my grandmother would can preserves and my grandfather would crank out some homemade strawberry ice cream. I've continued this tradition with my daughter but our haul is piddly compared to what my grandparents would get. I haven't done any canning yet this year but I did try out some new recipes. I'm totally addicted to the strawberry salsa now!

Strawberry Salsa

2 Cups Strawberries roughly chopped
1 Spring Onion (scallion) Chopped
Handful of Basil* (5-6 Leaves) Chopped
2 Tablespoons Lime Juice
1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
Salt to taste
Mix up and serve with lime tortilla chips

*Cilantro is what is traditionally used
You can also ad jalapeno or red pepper to add some spiciness

Strawberry Balsamic Dressing*

1/2 Pint Fresh Strawberries
1 Cup Olive Oil
2 Tablespoons Balsamic Vinegar
1/2 Tsp. Salt
1/4 Tsp. Ground Black Pepper
1/4 Dried Tarragon
1/4 Tsp. Honey

Put all your ingredient in a blender and blend until smooth

I had my first school photo shoot last week. I was worried it was going to be hard to direct the kids but for the most part they were great and I barely had to direct them at all!

So far we have eight prints done or in progress for the bookstore project. Two of them are not pictured because Mr. Hare has deemed them unready. We are keeping our fingers crossed and noses to the grindstone in order to have it ready by June.

Much of the year I miss living in a city but when spring comes I fall in love with the country again. I stopped by one of our Farmer's Markets on the way home (Nalls Farm Market, Berryville, VA) and picked up a bunch of vegetables for dinner...

Yellow/orange tomatoes are one of my favorites. My dad got me hooked on the following simple recipe....

1 (or more) yellow or orange tomatoes sliced
Drizzle with olive oil
Salt and Pepper to taste
Tablespoon (or more if you) like Red Vinegar

Greetings everyone! We have returned from the land of the hot dog king - Greenville, South Carolina. We ventured down there for my cousin's wedding which happened to be the same weekend as Artisphere; one of the country's top art festivals. We really enjoyed Greenville's thriving Main Street except I must say I didn't see a book or record store so someone needs to get on that. Artisphere was great and we got to meet some wonderful artists and since I didn't get to do Must See Monday yesterday here it is now...

We loved printer/painter Kent Ambler's work. Kent gave us much insight into his process , gave us recommendations on which festivals are good to show at and other great advice. We bought the above "Happy Boston" print and can't wait to add more of his work to our collection. I happened to find Dolan Geiman's etsy shop the night before we attended Artisphere and was happily surprised when I came upon his booth! Upon meeting him we found out that he's from the Shenandoah Valley near where we live. He now lives in Chicago working on his mixed media creations and running Dolan Geiman Inc. with his wife Ali Marie. Dolan's work is deeply mired in his rural upbringing and this love of nature carries this through to his green business practices. Dolan and Ali Marie are truly inspiring! I was going to skip MSM this week but having received the above items (top pic) from Anna Tillett today I had to feature her work. Anna is an ol' college pal whom I wish I had gotten to know better back then but luckily, through glory of that one social networking site, we've reconnected and gotten a little better aquainted! Anna is beautiful, talented...funny and smart. I love the variation of style in her work and it never fails to make me laugh and smile.

Thanks Anna for the tote and all the extries you included. It really made my day!

Have you tried some of Ben & Jerry's new flavors? I highly recommend the Bonnaroo Buzz and I think the Red Velvet is my new favorite.

If you are opting for a cocktail this evening, as I am, and like bloody marys here is my recipe. It was passed down to me by my mother in-law. The great thing about them is that they are somewhat healthy- you get a whole serving of vegetables in just one drink! Also, I've never gotten a hangover from them!

I don't do measurements so just adjust to your taste...

You will need:

A glass of ice...size of your choosing

A shot or so of vodka of your choice...personally I like the triple distilled Smirnoff

Then pour in some dill pickle juice...I like the polish kosher - it's a little spicier

Top with tomato/vegetable juice

Stir...

Finish with Dill Pickle Spear and salt and pepper (optional)

Apple Blossom Midway Day 2!

Day two on the midway was much warmer and busier. Nate Rhodes of Chester Records joined in the fun and Andy entertained us as he advertised our wares. Many thanks Andy and Jen of Winchester Book Gallery for having us! Thanks to all the people that stopped by and for the wonderful feedback. On the midway...

We had our first day on the Apple Blossom Midway today. It was a pretty chilly day and from what I hear a slow day in comparison to years past but Azzy and I had a fun day meeting and watching people. Tomorrow is supposed to be a warm, sunny day and we're excited to go back for round two and I think I'll have to have a funnel cake for breakfast....mmmm.

Apple Blossom Festival is here! Friday and Saturday we will be downtown selling prints. We're really excited and a little nervous..this will be our first time doing a festival/fair type thing. Monday we spent much of the day printing up a storm. Even the little one did some bookmarks of her own design...

Neil and I LOVE Tugboat Printshop. Artists Paul Roden and Valerie Lueth operate the printshop from their home/studio in Pittsburgh, PA. Their ornate prints leave me dizzy and their blog and website are a great source of inspiration and insight into technique. Also, check out this great woodblock print tutorial they did for Martha Stewart here.

I hope everyone had a good weekend! Instead of sharing a visual artist this week I thought I'd share a band I saw over the weekend at the Record Store Day event at Chester Records (slash Winchester Book Gallery). Gallows Bound would most easily be filed under alt-country...they are from Winchester, VA, and other than that I really don't know anything about them! Check out aux send for the a full video of the show and I think an interview with the band coming soon.

3 Thankfuls Thursday

I've decided to start a new series called 3 Thankfuls Thursday in which I will list three things from the week or that day in which I am thankful for. Years and years ago (before the age of blogging) a friend of mine told me how he had started writing down each day three things he was thankful for and shortly after I started to as well. Although I can't say I have done it every day since, it is something I come back to now and then (thanks Sean!). It's great way to put life into perspective and to keep a positive attitude.

Today started off as a terrible, no good, very bad day but as the day went on it got better. On my drive home I started to think of the positive things and thought I'd share them with you...

1. Averting a car crash/good brakes

2. My friend Bonni. When I smashed my thumb in my desk drawer and started to cry from not only the pain but the culmination of three very stressful workdays, Bonni offered to get me ice and when I said no she ran out and got me a latte, tissues and a scone with a smiley face on it. I'm so lucky to have a friend like her! Thank you Bonni!

I've been meaning to devote a Must See Monday post to Cuban born artist Elsa Mora for awhile now. Her work is prolific, diverse, whimsical, delicate... and in a word lovely. From drawing, painting, paper cutting/paper sculpture, miniature books, jewelry, clothing to dolls...(I'm sure I'm leaving something out) it's enough to make a gal green with envy. Elsa has five blogs about the various mediums she works in, a personal blog and a personal style blog. As I've read more of her blog(s) I have found not only is she a magnificent artist but a truly wonderful and inspiring person. Check out her etsy shop Elsita or visit her main blog here.
